Vol. 354 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Road.

6.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will sanction the commencement of work on the Cork County Council road at Caherhore, Bantry, County Cork, which subsided several months ago; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The planning and execution of the scheme is a matter for Cork County Council. I understand that the council are at present engaged in negotiations in regard to the acquisition of land which is needed for the works proposed. Earlier this year, I made an initial road grant of £50,000 available for the scheme.

Is the Minister aware of the widespread hardship being caused by the collapse of this road which has been out of use now for 12 months? Is he aware also that a CPO was sent from Cork County Council to the Department in August this year but that no action has been taken in that regard? In these circumstances can the Minister give an assurance that the local people will not be disadvantaged for much longer?

I understand that recent approaches from the land owners' solicitors have allowed the county council to re-open negotiations on the acquisition of the land by agreement. Therefore, the CPO proceedings have been suspended. I assure the Deputy that once the negotiations are completed, there will be no delay.

Question No. 7 postponed.
