Vol. 354 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roofing Materials.

9.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will direct his housing officers to recommend apex type roofs on extensions under the house improvement grants scheme as against the flat felt roofs, in view of the short life span of such roofs.

I am not prepared to take action on the lines proposed by the Deputy. Flat felt roofs, provided they are properly constructed, have been acceptable for grant purposes for a number of years and there is no case for a change in the position now. I might add that such roofs conform with the Department's specification for such works, including those contained in the draft building regulations.

Is the Minister aware that many of the felt roofs erected in the last ten years have had to be replaced? Is he aware that flat felt roofs have a short life span? Is the Minister aware that many applicants wait until ten years elapse before applying for a further grant for roofing their houses?

It must be that bad work was done originally because I have had a flat felt roof on the back of my house for more than 20 years. Felt roofs are good although I accept that they have a limited life span.

Very limited.

A life span of 20 years is not very limited. I do not propose to make any change in regard to this.

Is the Minister aware that people are continuously inquiring how long they must wait before they can re-apply for a roof grant because their flat felt roof has failed? This is costly to the Department who must have buildings inspected. It is also expensive for house owners. The Minister should investigate this matter to see how many have applied for a grant to renew a flat felt roof.

I will check up on that matter.
