Written Answers. - Allocation of Teachers.

627.

asked the Minister for Education if she will give the following information in relation to teacher's of remedial pupils: (1) the number of schools in each sector who have an allocated remedial teacher; and (2) the list of all such schools by sector.

Seven hundred and sixty seven remedial teaching posts have been sanctioned in schools in the primary sector. One hundred and ninety seven of these posts are on a shared basis between two or more schools. In all, pupils in 1,014 primary schools benefit from the 767 remedial teaching posts sanctioned in the primary school sector. In each of the school years 1979-80 and 1980-81, 100 additional posts were created in second level schools specifically in the area of remedial education. These 200 posts, which are independent of the changes in the staffing ratios, were allocated as follows:

Vocational Schools, 100; Secondary Schools, 80; Comprehensive and Community Schools 20.

I shall provide the Deputy with the list of schools in question as soon as possible.

In addition many other second level schools employ teachers within their approved allocations who have been trained in the area of remedial education.

Specific provision was made in the teaching staff allocations to vocational education committees for the 1984-85 session for guidance services in vocational schools The allocation in respect of guidance teaching, as in the case of other teachers, is to the individual committee's scheme and it is the responsibility of the committee to apportion the service of guidance teachers to the schools as appropriate. A total of 139 guidance posts was included in the 1984-85 allocations to the committees.

asked the Minister for Education, in view of the extremely small allocation of woodwork and metalwork teachers to secondary schools, if she intends to rectify this situation by a policy of positive discrimination in the allocation of such teachers to secondary schools in order to achieve curriculum reform and the elimination of sex stereotyping in subject choice.

The practice of the allocation of woodwork and metalwork teachers to particular schools was discontinued as from the 1981-82 school year.

It is a matter for the management authorities of secondary schools when filling vacancies within their authorised quota to recruit such teachers as are necessary to meet their needs.
