Vol. 354 No. 3

Written Answers. - Youth Employment Agency.

633.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will give details of the expenditure of the additional £1 million allocated to the Youth Employment Agency for administration in 1984.

The original estimate for administration costs of the Youth Employment Agency in 1984 was £1.79 million. The corresponding expenditure figure for 1983 was £729,739. The increase was largely attributable to an expected increase in Agency staff and a corresponding increase in agency activities. It is now estimated that administration costs in 1984 will be about £1 million, i,e, an increase of about £200,000 on 1983 expenditure. The underexpenditure in 1984 is due mainly to the lengthy process of recruiting additional staff only now being completed.

asked the Minister for Labour if it is his intention to use Youth Employment Agency funds for the provision of school equipment.

It is not my intention that the proceeds of the youth employment levy should be used for general school equipment. However, necessary equipment may be included in the cost of manpower orientated programmes and the vocational preparation and training programmes provided by educational authorities and funded out of the proceeds of the levy.
