Vol. 354 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Maternity Leave.

20.

asked the Minister for the Public Service (a) the number of employees who availed of the maternity leave scheme in the latest period available; (b) if temporary staff were recruited during the period of leave; and (c) the number of working days covered by the scheme.

For the purpose of the reply I am taking employees to mean civil servants in the usual definition of the term, i.e. established and unestablished officers excluding temporary staff and industrials. The information sought is as follows:

(a) 723 civil servants commenced maternity leave during the period 1 November 1983 to 31 October 1984

(b) Ten temporary staff were recruited to cover absences on maternity leave during the period.

(c) The 723 civil servants referred to at (a) were on maternity leave for a total of 49,018 working days during the period.
