asked the Minister for the Public Service the number of extensions in the public service at the present time in the non-technical area and in the technical area; the numbers for each grade; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My responsibility in relation to the retention of staff after retiring age is, in accordance with the Civil Service Regulation Act, 1956, confined to civil servants.

There are presently only 59 civil servants retained beyond the normal retirement age. Forty-two of these are employed in non-technical posts, while the remaining 17 are employed in technical posts.

The following statement sets out the details of the grades in which the officers are retained:
