Vol. 354 No. 7

Written Answers. - Kerry Turbary Allotments.

698.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will arrange as a matter of urgency to distribute turbary allotments in Raecaol Bog, near Gneeveguilla in County Kerry, to the hundreds of householders in the Killarney and east Kerry area who are seeking banks of turf; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Turbary facilities on this bog were available from my Department for some years but no offers were forthcoming. More recently, arrangements were made for a lease of some 200 acres to a local co-operative society for turbary development but the society did not take up the lease. While I understand that there is no dearth of privately-owned turbary in the district, the possibility of a long-term lease of Raecaol Bog with a view to its development to meet local demand is being considered further by my Department.
