Vol. 354 No. 7

Written Answers. - Foster Families.

715.

asked the Minister for Health in view of the increasing number of homeless children, if he plans to increase the number of foster families.

The number of children being placed by health boards with foster families has shown a significant increase in recent years. One of the main contributory factors has been the introduction by my Department of a new approach to the recruitment and training of foster parents. The new scheme, which is known as the "Parenting Plus Scheme" includes special training for social workers and foster parents and an educational programme for prospective foster parents. This more structured approach to recruitment has resulted in a greater awareness of fostering. I am confident that it will continue to assist boards to maintain and increase their pool of suitable foster parents.
