Vol. 354 No. 10

Written Answers. - Prison Psychiatric Services.

791.

asked the Minister for Justice if when a prisoner (details supplied) was sent to Loughan House in August 1984, the prison was informed of the prisoner's background and, if not, the reason; and the therapeutic psychiatric services available to mentally ill prisoners in Loughan House.'

Limerick East): In accordance with normal procedure, relevant information known to my Department about the offender (including in this case information about his psychiatric history) was made available to the authorities in Loughan House and he received treatment from the medical officer there.

The services of a consultant psychiatrist are available to any offender at Loughan House who in the opinion of the medical officer requires such attention.

I might add that the offender, who was not due to be released until 9 January 1985, was in fact released under the supervision of a probation and welfare officer on 6 November 1984.
