Vol. 354 No. 12

Written Answers. - Development of National Parks.

163.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider proposals for the development of man-made beaches on the lakes of Killarney, similar to the one on Lake Michigan in Chicago: and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Lakes of Killarney form part of Killarney National Park. The major objective in designating an area as a national park is to preserve it from material interference by man. It would not be in keeping with recognised international criteria for the management of national parks if the commissioners were to allow the development of man-made beaches on the lakes.
