Vol. 354 No. 12

Written Answers. - County Kerry Coastal Protection Work.

176.

asked the Minister for Finance when the coast protection work at Maharees, Castlegregory, County Kerry, will commence.

177.

asked the Minister for Finance the up to date position regarding the proposed coast protection work for the Maharees near Castlegregory PO, County Kerry.

182.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the grave concern of the residents of the Maharees near Castlegregory, County Kerry, regarding serious damage caused to property, both public and private, as a result of coastal erosion in recent years and particularly during the past month; and when his Department will carry out coastal protection work in the area.'

I propose taking Questions Nos. 176, 177 and 182 together.

I am aware that there is a problem of coast erosion in the Maharees area. However, as indicated in the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 772 (Volume 335 column 1567), the processing of a proposal for coast protection works in the area cannot be advanced until the removal of beach material, which is continuing despite the order made by the Minister for Transport in October 1980, has ceased.

178.

asked the Minister for Finance when the coast protection work on the coast line between Tralee, Spa and Fenit, County Kerry, will commence.

The statutory preliminary examinations of four proposals by Kerry County Council for protection works to parts of the coastline between Tralee, Spa and Fenit have been undertaken by the Commissioners of Public Works. Kerry County Council have been advised that the proposal for a fifth scheme, at Lohercannon and Kerries, does not come within the scope of the Coast Protection Act, 1963.

The reports on the preliminary examinations are under consideration by the commissioners with a view to making determinations, under section 4 of the Coast Protection Act, 1963, as to whether the circumstances are such as to warrant the undertaking of remedial schemes. The question of commencing works cannot arise until the determinations have been made and any other consequential processes required by the Act have been completed.
