Vol. 354 No. 12

Written Answers. - Drug Abuse in Prisons.

416.

asked the Minister for Justice the measures he proposes to take to prevent the illegal passage of drugs to prisoners in Mountjoy Prison and in St. Patrick's Institution.

Limerick East): I am satisfied that the Governors of all the prisons and places of detention are fully aware of the likelihood that some of those in their custody have been drug abusers in the community and would continue to abuse drugs in custody if they could.

Various precautions are already being taken and Governors are free to add to them. On the other hand neither I nor the prison authorities would wish to add unduly to the restrictions that prisoners and detainees are subject to in order to make absolutely sure that a few drug abusers do not come into possession of drugs while they are in custody. Thus, for example, it is not proposed to introduce a barrier between all prisoners and detainees and their visitors though such a barrier is provided in Mountjoy Prison in the case of prisoners known to be drug abusers.
