asked the Minister for Education if she will state in respect of school transport in the 1983-84 academic year (a) the organisations that were involved in the running of the scheme; (b) the amount of money paid to each of these organisations; (c) the amount of money spent altogether on the scheme; and (d) the total number of children involved.

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows:

(a) The organisations involved in the running of school transport during the 1983-84 academic year were the Department of Education and Córas Iompair Éireann. CIE administer the scheme at local level in co-operation with the management authorities of primary schools and with the chief executive officers of vocational education committees who act as transport liaison officers in respect of school transport to post primary schools.

(b) The net amount paid to CIE in respect of the operation of school transport for the 1983-84 academic year was approximately £28.6 million.

(c) Excluding capital expenditure of £345,000, the total cost of school transport in 1983-84 was approximately £31 million.

(d) The total number of children who availed themselves of school transport during 1983-84 was 162,000. Of these, 149,000 were eligible for school transport under the terms of the school transport schemes, and the remainder availed themselves of concessionary fare-paying transport on special school services.
