Vol. 354 No. 12

Written Answers. - Air Pollution Legislation.

561.

asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the rapidly deteriorating air quality, particularly in Dublin, the steps he intends to take to declare Dublin a smokeless zone.

562.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the ever increasing air pollution in Dublin city and its suburbs, he will outline the plans he has to counteract this problem; and if he will give consideration to making Dublin a smoke free zone.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 561 and 562 together.

I would refer the Deputies to my reply to Question Number 15 of 22 November 1984, in which I stated that the work of preparing new air pollution legislation, which will take account of national and EC requirements, is at present being undertaken by my Department. Various options aimed at improving air quality generally are being examined in conjunction with the preparation of the legislation and among these is the possibility of designating specific areas as smokeless zones.
