Vol. 354 No. 12

Written Answers. - Irish Sea Pollution.

585.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement on the levels and effect of pollution in the Irish Sea from chemical and other effluents.

There is no evidence of any significant pollution or associated adverse effects in the western Irish Sea. Localised pollution does occur, at times, in parts of the coastal waters adjacent to the major concentrations of population at Dublin and Dún Laoghaire, and to a lesser extent at some other locations affected by sewage discharges. The new treatment works at Ringsend and proposals to cater for Dún Laoghaire should result in improvements in the areas most affected, while the need for better disposal arrangements will be taken into account, where appropriate, in the on-going sanitary services programme.
