Vol. 354 No. 12

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

649.

asked the Minister for Education the reasons third level educational grants have not been paid to a person (details supplied) in County Galway; if she is aware of the serious financial plight of this student; if she will direct her Department to make immediate payments; the amounts and date of payments; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The grants in respect of attendance at Thomond College of Education are normally paid in three instalments during the academic year. The first is paid in late November or early December, the second in January and the third in April. The first instalment of the grant for the student in question was sent to him on 5 December this year. The amount paid was £333.33. I am conscious of the need students have to get their grants as early as possible and my Department do everything possible to ensure that the payments are made without undue delay.

asked the Minister for Education the reasons a higher education ESF grant has not been paid up to date to a student (details supplied) in County Galway; if she is aware of this student's serious financial position and that only two-ninths of the grant has been paid as yet this term, despite the fact that one-third should have been paid; the amount and date that payment will be made; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

From inquiries made I am satisfied that all payments due to the person concerned under the terms of my Department's middle level technician programme have been made. It is understood that the final monthly payment due for the current term will be made in the week commencing 17 December 1984.
