Vol. 354 No. 12

Written Answers. - Cork-UK Ferry Service.

48.

asked the Minister for Communications the steps he is taking to ensure an adequate Cork-UK service for the summer of 1985.

49.

asked the Minister for Communications the assistance the Government will give the promoters organising a car ferry service between Cork and Wales to enable proper marketing of tourism in Britain for the Kerry-Cork region to proceed forthwith; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 48 and 49 together. The provision of shipping services is not a function of my Department but rather for the commercial interests involved. As an exceptional measure, however, the Government has authorised me to convey to the promoters of Swansea Cork Car Ferries Limited an offer of a subsidy of up to £500,000 to offset such losses as may be incurred on the operation of a Cork-Swansea summer service in 1985 on the understanding that there will be no subsidy in 1986 and subsequent years.
