Vol. 355 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sheelin Farmers' Association.

381.

asked the Minister for the Environment the names of the members of the Sheelin Farmers' Association; if he will release the text on the undertaking which he received from the Sheelin Farmers' Association; if he is satisfied that the matter is being dealt with properly at the present time; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Details of the current membership of the Sheelin Farmers' Association are not available in my Department. The undertaking received from that association on 16 December 1983 reads as follows:

The pig producers belonging to the Sheelin Farmers' Association agree:—

(1) To assume responsibility — both administrative and financial — for the Slurry Transport Scheme as and from 1 January 1985. (2) To participate in the new management committee which will be set up to administer the said scheme.

The pig producers further agree to finance the scheme from their own resources.

A statement on Lough Sheelin was made by me in response to questions Nos. 578 and 588 from the Deputy on 13 December 1984. Since then Cavan County Council have obtained nominations for the new Lough Sheelin Management Committee from the ESB, ACOT, IFA, Department of Fisheries and Forestry and the Central Fisheries Board. The Sheelin Farmers' Association are in the process of nominating their representatives to the committee and when these are received, it is the intention of the county council to call an early meeting of the committee. The new committee will oversee the implementation of measures necessary for the protection of the lake, including compliance by members of the Sheelin Farmers' Association with the undertaking given by them.
