Vol. 355 No. 9

Written Answers. - Residential Property Tax.

118.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state: (a) the amount so far collected in residential property tax since it was first imposed, expressed (i) in gross total; and (ii) net of the estimated cost of collection, including salaries and overheads of revenue staff engaged therein; and (b) his estimate of the likely impact on the revenue collection process in other tax areas if, residential property tax having been abolished, the personnel thereby released were employed in those other areas.

The gross amount so far collected in residential property tax is £2.42 million.

The cost of collection of the tax is estimated at £0.25 million per annum and at £0.38 million to date. This results in an estimated net yield from the tax to date of £2.04 million.

It is difficult to estimate the impact on the collection of revenue of abolishing residential property tax and transferring the personnel engaged in its administration to other duties. The yield from the tax is estimated for the current financial year at £3 million as compared with £1.1 million for 1984. Any answer to the final part of the Deputy's question would be highly speculative.
