Vol. 355 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Galway School.

339.

asked the Minister for Education if her Department will proceed with the building of two classrooms for handicapped children at a school (details supplied) in County Galway; if she is aware that her Department initiated this project, that the site has been given free to her Department, that the local contribution is available and the contractor appointed; if she will state the cost of this extension and the cost of plans and drawings submitted by the architect and quantity surveyors for this work.

My Department have agreed in principle to grant-aiding the building of two classrooms for handicapped children at the national school referred to and are at present in consultation with the school authorities with a view to their being able to proceed with the building at an early date. I am aware of the considerations indicated in the question, all of which have been taken into account in the negotiations with the school authorities. I would point out however that it was not at any time in question that my Department would take over the site for the proposed classrooms. The site and the classrooms would be, and remain, vested in the school trustees, and their use would be under the control of the school's board of management.
