asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details, in respect of the most recent tax year available, of the amount of each of the following tax allowances: mortgage interest relief, life insurance relief, Voluntary Health Insurance relief, and relief on medical expenses at each of the rates of tax such as 35 per cent, 45 per cent and so on; and the aggregate cost of each relief.

The total cost to the Exchequer for the current income tax year of the tax reliefs referred to by the Deputy is estimated as follows:

Statistics are not available which would enable the cost of these reliefs to be given at the various income tax rates and this information could be obtained only at a disproportionate cost.
