Vol. 356 No. 1

Written Answers. - Purchase of Commonage.

476.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the reason his Department will not proceed with the purchase of 1,050 acres of commonage in Derrygoolin, Whitegate, despite the fact that local farmers are anxious to sell this commonage and are prepared to negotiate a very attractive price with his Department; and if he will now review his decision in this matter and re-open negotiations with the farmers.

This substantial commonage is complicated by certain tenure problems. This situation and the fact that for the present, in the light of available resources, other more attractive offers of land warrant priority, has precluded purchase negotiations to date but the position will be kept under review.
