The position at 31 December 1984 was that under the farm modernisation scheme applications in respect of 399, 553 hectares had been approved for land improvement including drainage. Work covering 303,073 hectares had been completed and grant aid paid amounted to £58.9 million. It is not possible to segregate the figures between drainage and other improvement. The corresponding figures for drainage under the western drainage scheme were 165,440 hectares approved and 133,214 hectares completed and grant aid paid amounting to £51.2 million.
