Vol. 357 No. 5

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

535.

asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of grant-in-aid allocated to voluntary sporting organisations in 1985 showing the percentage increase or decrease on the amount paid in 1984.

An amount of £920,000 is available for direct grant-in-aid to national sports organisations in 1985 to assist in the areas of coaching, administration, equipment, international competition and special projects. This sum represents an increase of 9.51 per cent over 1984 expenditure under these headings.

It should be noted that expenditure in 1984 included a sum of £100,000 in respect of GAA Centenary Year celebrations. As this is a non-recurring item of expenditure the allocation for 1985 represents an actual increase of 24.31 per cent. A list of grants allocated to date for 1985 is appended.

Notes:

1 1985 is the first year for these organisations to receive grants.

2 A sum of £50,000 of this grant is to assist towards the cost of hosting European Special Olympics in Dublin in July 1985. The percentage given is based on the increase in the normal grant to this organisation over the equivalent grant in 1984.

3 The grants listed above are in respect of coaching, administration, equipment and special projects. The percentage increase in each case compares with the grants under equivalent headings in 1984. Grants towards the cost of international competition in 1985 have yet to be allocated.
