asked the Minister for Justice in view of representations already made to him in relation to a case (details supplied) and as a final or satisfactory reply on the matter has not as yet been received, if he will give an up-to-date reply.

Limerick East): The precise arrangements for policing particular areas are a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that a meeting was held on 9 April 1985 between senior Garda officers and a number of traders from the area to discuss the problem of crime and vandalism. I understand from the Garda authorities that the matters complained of are being made the subject of on-going discussions between local gardaí and the traders and that it is hoped to effect a marked improvement in the position.

As regards the level of policing in the area, I am informed that the area is covered by Fitzgibbon Street and Mountjoy stations and that there has been a net increase of 30 gardaí in the aggregate strength of these stations — 11 in Fitzgibbon Street station and 19 in Mountjoy station — since January 1983.
