Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 855 to 857, inclusive, together.

The detailed deployment of Garda manpower is a matter for the Garda authorities who have informed me that Rosslare port is served by members from Rosslare pier station and the divisional headquarters at Wexford. The number of members on duty in the port area varies in accordance with the volume of port traffic and the local Garda officers consider that the present policing arrangements for the area provide an adequate service.

The particular duties assigned to members of the force at Rosslare port are matters for the local Garda officers. In addition to performing duties relating to immigration control, members also perform normal Garda duties relating to the prevention and detection of crime, including the detection of drug offences. As regards the detection of drug offences, a total of 12 members from Rosslare pier and Wexford stations have undergone a specialised in-service training course in anti-drugs work and these members pay particular attention to the problem in the course of their duties.
