asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline any proposals his Department have for detention or prison facilities to be provided in the south Dublin city area; and if in view of press speculation, he will make a statement in the matter.

Limerick East): There is insufficient accommodation at present in existing prisons and places of detention and new accommodation being built will not be ready for a few years yet. In these circumstances it may be taken for granted that my Department are prepared to look at any potentially suitable property that may be on the market and that could be adapted reasonably quickly to custodial purposes.

As has been confirmed to the news media, acquisition of a property in the James's Street neighbourhood, owned by the Irish Christian Brothers, is being considered at present.
