Vol. 357 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dundalk School Extension.

861.

asked the Minister for Education if she will give details under the following headings, regarding the extensions granted for the Grammar School, the CBS, the VEC and St. Mary's College in Dundalk, County Louth: (1) the square meterage of each extension; (2) the cost of each extension; (3) the State contribution to each project; (4) the amounts of extra pupils envisaged for each extension when operational; and (5) if any of the extensions will be of a temporary nature.

It is not the practice of the Department to give information about construction costs in the case of individual school building projects. The same area and cost limits apply to all types of post primary schools and these are being applied in the case of the four Dundalk schools referred to in the Deputy's question.

A 90 per cent grant of approved costs is payable in respect of the secondary school projects and the entire cost of the vocational school project will be payable. There are no extra pupils envisaged in the case of St. Mary's College and the CBS which involve the replacement of existing unsatisfactory teaching accommodation and the provision of facilities which are lacking at present but are a normal part of all new school buildings. The grammar school project envisages 30 extra pupils.

The vocational school project is to provide for an additional 200 places which it is anticipated will be required for the area in the short term. The construction will be for a relatively short period only. The construction of this project will be by means of good quality system built building similar to that being provided in other areas throughout the country in similar circumstances.
