On the basis of the most up to date returns from local authorities, local authority estimates for water charges in 1983 and 1984 included amounts of £30.896 million and £38.593 million respectively. In 1983 £22.506 million in water charges was collected by the authorities and the equivalent figure for 1984 amounted to £32.541 million. These figures are provided in so far as the charges in question are separately identified in the returns submitted by the local authorities. These figures include charges which have been in operation before 1983 under earlier legislation.
