The national debt at 31 December 1984 is estimated to have been £18.5 billion. Interest payments on the national debt charged on central fund services amounted to £1,566 million of which £702 million was paid in respect of foreign currency debt. In addition, interest payments of £180 million on the national debt were met from the supply services mainly in the form of a subsidy for the cost of borrowings made by the local authorities from the Exchequer for housing and sanitary services.
