Vol. 357 No. 10

Written Answers. - Mining Industry Employment.

550.

asked the Taoiseach the number of miners at present employed in Irish mines; and if he will give a breakdown of the numbers employed for each year since 1979.

The total number of persons engaged in the mining industry (coal mining and extraction and preparation of non-ferrous metal ores) together with the number of industrial workers is shown in the following table for September of each of the years 1979 to 1984. The figures for the years 1979 to 1981 are obtained from the annual census of industrial production and the figures for the years 1982 to 1984 are estimated on the basis of the quarterly industrial inquiry. Those inquiries cover establishments with three or more persons engaged. Miners are not separately distinguished in these inquiries, but they constitute most of the industrial workers shown in the table. The figures for September 1984 are the latest available.
