Vol. 357 No. 10

Written Answers. - Medical Card Application.

606.

asked the Minister for Health the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork has not yet been notified of the outcome of her application for a medical card, which she lodged last January, and, if the matter is still under investigation, if he will have the matter expedited with a view to an early decision and take the hardship and circumstances of the family into account.

Eligibility for a medical card is a matter for the chief executive officer of a health board. In this instance, I am informed by the Southern Health Board that renewal of the medical card was refused as the income was in excess of the eligibility guideline appropriate to the case. The family in question have now appealed on medical grounds and the board is awaiting documentation from the applicants in support of this appeal. On receipt of this documentation the application will be reexamined.
