Vol. 359 No. 4

Written Answers. - PAYE Statistics.

136.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of people who are self-employed and who are paying income tax under the PAYE system.

It is estimated that some 7,000 persons whose main source of income was from self-employment paid tax under the PAYE system on part of their income in 1982-83 the latest year for which relevant statistics are available. In addition, it is estimated that in the same year 15,000 persons whose main source of income was an employment in respect of which tax was paid under PAYE also had income from a trade or profession. In that year also an estimated 46,000 directors of close companies paid tax under the PAYE system. In many respects such directors are regarded as more akin to the self-employed than to employees.
