Vol. 359 No. 4

Written Answers. - Literacy Schemes.

57.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the publication of a report which indicated that between 12,000 and 15,000 people in the inner city are illiterate; and if she has any plans to deal with this situation.

I have seen the report to which the Deputy refers. Paragraph 2.13 of my Programme for Action in Education identifies literacy provision as a fundamental area of activity which will constitute a major thrust of future policy. I have given a grant-in-aid of £10,000 for this year to the National Adult Literacy Agency and I am making £18,000 available through the City of Dublin VEC for the literacy scheme run by the Dublin Institute of Adult Education. The national plan announced by the Government includes a provision of £1 million by 1987 for the vocational education committees to enable them to establish courses in community education and in literacy.
