Vol. 359 No. 4

Written Answers. - Employment of School Leavers.

86.

asked the Minister for Labour the proportion of school leavers in the Tallaght area of County Dublin that got employment in 1983; and if he expects the number to be higher in 1984.

I regret that the information sought by the Deputy is not available. There is no mechanism whereby details of the numbers of school leavers in a particular area who obtain employment can be established.

The principal source of information on the destination of school leavers is the school leavers' survey. The survey sample is designed to be representative of the situation nationally rather than of individual localities. It is not possible, therefore, to derive information from it in relation to a specific area such as Tallaght.

The most recent survey for which results are available was carried out in May 1984 of persons leaving school during the 1982-83 academic year. The main findings are that an estimated 28,400 leavers, just under 46 per cent, were in employment; 15,600 (25 per cent) were enrolled in further education; 13,400 (21.6 per cent) were still seeking their first job and 2,300 leavers (3.7 per cent) were unemployed after having had a job and lost it. These findings show an improvement in the position over the previous year with a 3.1 per cent increase of those in employment and a decline of 2.1 per cent of those unemployed.
