Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foreign Debt.

14.

asked the Minister for Finance the total accumulated foreign debt up to 30 June 1985; the total outstanding national debt as of the same date; the level of net Exchequer borrowing as a whole in the first half of 1985; and the level of net Exchequer foreign borrowing in the same period.

The total accumulated foreign debt of the Exchequer at 30 June last was £8.7 billion and the total outstanding Exchequer national debt at the same date was £19.7 billion. During the first half of 1985 net Exchequer borrowing operations came to £1,905 million, comprising—

net foreign borrowing of £937 million, net sales of securities in the domestic market by the Exchequer and the Central Bank of £818 million and receipts from small savings of £150 million.

Part of the Central Bank's sales of securities in the domestic market were made out of the bank's portfolio of Government securities and will result in cash receipts to the Exchequer according as the portfolio is replenished.
