Vol. 361 No. 1

Written Answers. - Defendant Statistics.

372.

Mr. Brennan

asked the Minister for Justice (a) the number of defendants in murder cases who have successfully pleaded an insanity defence since 1921; (b) the number of defendants who have been held unfit to plead in criminal cases over the same period; and (c) the number detained in psychiatric institutions by sex, age, marital status, length of stay and diagnosis.

Limerick East): The information is not available in the Department and to assemble it — by examination of records going back over 60 years — would require the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time.
