Vol. 361 No. 1

Written Answers. - Department of Justice Activities.

17.

asked the Minister for Justice the steps he has taken to examine the role, function and development of the various agencies under his control with particular reference to the gardaí and courts, with a view to getting the maximum return from existing human, financial and technical resources.

Limerick East): All of my Department's activities are subject to continual scrutiny with a view to maximum effectiveness and economy. In addition there are special reviews of particular aspects of my Department's work and in this context I would draw attention, in the case of the Garda Síochána, to recent legislative proposals including the legislation now before Dáil Éireann concerning complaints about the conduct of the members of the Garda Síochána. In the case of the courts, procedures are under continuous review by the relevant statutory rule-making bodies, by the Law Reform Commission and by the Committee on Court Practice and Procedure.
