Vol. 361 No. 8

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefit.

134.

asked the Minister for Health the reason a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5 in receipt of £173.09 public service pension per month is only in receipt of DPMA at the rate of £15.18 giving him a total weekly income for himself and his wife of £55.08; and if he will agree that this rate of payment is inadequate to provide for two adults.

In determining the amount of disabled persons maintenance allowance payable, health boards are obliged to have regard to applicants' income from any other source. The person in question has, in addition to his public service pension, income from the investment of his lump sum which is assessed by the health board at £8.07 per week. Taking account of this and the fact that a deduction of £2 per week is being made in respect of an overpayment, I am satisfied that the rate of payment is correct. If there is any change in regard to the applicants investment the health board will, on production of documentary evidence of such a change, be prepared to re-examine his means.
