Vol. 361 No. 9

Written Answers. - NCAD Degree Course.

137.

asked the Minister for Education with regard to the art teaching course at the National College of Art and Design, whether she will make a statement on the decision to deny students of that course degrees which they had been advised would be awarded on the basis of individual assessment pending a decision on the validation of the course by the NCEA.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to the adjournment debate in the Seanad on 31 October, 1985 in which I expressed my great concern about the problems created for the students in question through the unsatisfactory situation arising from the action of the authorities of the college in recruiting students to a course which had not been validated by the appropriate validating agency and was in itself the subject of a review by the board of the college. I have conveyed my concern to the board and have requested the board to take all necessary steps to bring about a resolution of the problem and to ensure that there will not be a recurrence of this kind of situation in the future.
