asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the quota which has been acquired for Ireland and each of the other EC countries including Spain and Portugal for the species hake in Irish territorial waters; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - Hake Quotas.
28.
Fisheries quotas are not allocated on the basis of territorial waters but rather on the basis of areas or zones as defined by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Taking those areas which correspond most closely to Irish territorial waters, the following are the relevant quotas in 1985 for hake:
Tonnes |
|
Belgium |
200 |
France |
10,420 |
Ireland |
1,300 |
Netherlands |
90 |
United Kingdom |
3,910 |
The allocation of hake quotas among the various member states for 1986 has not yet been finalised. However under the Treaty of Acccession, Spain will be entitled to have a quota of 18,000 tonnes in certain Community waters. Portugal will not be entitled to a hake quota in these waters.
