Vol. 361 No. 9

Written Answers. - Cork Harbour Pollution Levels.

45.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he is aware of the alleged pollution problems in Cork Harbour which could put at risk the £2 million a year Cork oyster fishery; and if he proposes to take any action in the matter.

I understand that the Deputy is referring to recent press reports about an investigation being conducted by a study group of University College, Cork, on the incidence of fish disease in Cork harbour. I have had inquiries made in the matter of the organisers of this study and have been told that the reports in question are entirely speculative and premature. The study group has not in fact completed its investigation and has not drawn any conclusions from its findings to date; neither has it established any link between the disease incidence found in fish in the harbour and pollution. I also understand that no disease problems with oysters in the harbour have been evident to date. My Department will, of course keep in touch with the progress of the investigation and keep the position under close observation as will, no doubt, Cork County Council which is the statutory authority responsible for controlling pollution levels in the harbour.
