Under the Fisheries Act, 1980, the regional fisheries boards have primary responsibility for the development of coarse fishing in their respective areas. The Cavan/Monaghan area which is in the upper reaches of the River Erne catchment is the responsibility of the Northern Regional Fisheries Board. The board has an ongoing programme of development works in this area which includes the construction of stands, stiles, footbridges, pathways and weed clearance. There are ample stocks of coarse fish in the waters in this area at present.
