Vol. 361 No. 9

Written Answers. - By-Pass Surgery Waiting List.

96.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that a person (details supplied) in Dublin has been waiting for a by-pass operation for three years at the Mater hospital; if he is also aware of the concern of the local GP regarding the deterioration in this patient's condition; and if his Department will give an estimate for the costs of this operation.

I understand from the Mater hospital authorities that the person referred to by the Deputy has been on the waiting list for surgery for three years. The criterion for selection of patients for by-pass surgery is medical need and not ability to pay. The waiting list is reviewed each week by the consultants concerned. The average estimated cost of this operation is about £6,500.
