Vol. 362 No. 5

Written Answers. - County Limerick School Fencing.

158.

asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in the replacement of the fence surrounding Ballynanty national school, Limerick, which was damaged by wandering horses eight months ago; if she is aware of the potential hazard to young children attending the school and that due to lack of proper fencing a schoolchild there has recently been seriously injured by an animal during school hours; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that the existing fencing at Ballynanty national school, Limerick, is in poor condition due in the main to vandalism and that there have been many instances of unauthorised entry to the site. My Department's professional advisers have been examining the matter in consultation with the school authorities and Limerick Corporation, and have prepared proposals for the provision of new fencing. The school authorities have recently been given the necessary documents to enable tenders to be invited and it is my Department's intention, subject to a suitable tender being received, to approve a grant and to authorise the school authorities to place a contract.
