Vol. 364 No. 8

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 19, 20, 2, 21, 22 and 23. Private Members' Business shall be No. 45. By agreement, the Dáil shall sit later than 9 p.m. today and not later than 11 p.m. and business shall be interrupted at 10.30 p.m.

Also by agreement, the proceedings on the Second Stage of No. 19 shall be brought to a conclusion not later than 1.30 p.m. and the Minister for Social Welfare shall be called on to conclude not later than 1.15 p.m.

Also by agreement, the proceedings on the remaining Stages of No. 20 shall be brought to a conclusion not later than 7 p.m. by one question which shall be put from the Chair and which shall in relation to amendments include only amendments set down by the Minister for Justice. Also by agreement, Nos. 22 and 23 shall be taken at the conclusion of the proceedings on No. 45 if not reached earlier.

Are the arrangements for the late sitting and for taking items Nos. 19 and 20 agreed? Agreed. In so far as it is necessary to have agreement for taking items Nos. 22 and 23, is it agreed? Agreed.

I understand that my colleague, Deputy Brian Lenihan, raised the question of the Government giving time to discuss our agricultural industry, particularly in regard to developments in the European Community. Am I in order in asking the Tánaiste if he has had time to consider this matter?

I suggest that Deputy Lenihan should take this matter up with the Whips which is the ordinary procedure.

Yes, we will certainly do that but I am availing of this opportunity to ask the Tánaiste to consider this matter sympathetically and favourably as a matter of great importance. When he is there as Taoiseach now we might as well flex some muscles.

Strictly speaking, that is not in order on the Order of Business.

Could the Tánaiste indicate when legislation controlling the testing of drugs on humans will be introduced as it was indicated at the start of the session that it would be introduced in a matter of weeks?

It will be introduced in about two weeks.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the question of the loss of 380 jobs in Rowntree Mackintosh.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the question of the serious damage to religious statues and property by a group of people who have publicly indicated that they will continue this activity.

Deputy Sheehan should keep out of their way.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I should like to raise on the Adjournment the question of the major food fair in Barcelona where, although 70 countries were represented, CTT or CBF did not make any effort to accommodate the meat industry in this country——

I will communicate with Deputy Sheehan.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the question of the extension of the gas pipeline to Border counties.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I wish to ask the Tánaiste if he will get in touch with the Department of Finance because of statements made by officials of that Department casting reflections on the professional competence of Irish sailors on board the Irish Spruce at Marseilles.

That does not arise on the Order of Business.

Indian officers who were put on board received double the pay of Irish Shipping officers——

I am ruling the Deputy out of order and the louder he speaks the more out of order he will be.

I apologise for the rising intonation but I am relatively impotent in this House in regard to the very serious matter of Irish Shipping.

The Deputy will have to think again. He cannot raise it in this way.

Contradictory statements have been made in regard to——

I am sorry but the Deputy is out of order and I cannot hear him further.

Would the Chair invite me to his room to advise me as to how I might raise this very serious matter?

The Deputy will be very welcome in the Chair's room.
