Vol. 364 No. 8

Written Answers. - Deportation of Irish National.

18.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has been in contact with the South African Government directly or indirectly in order to bring about the release of Father Dick O'Riordan, principal of a seminary school in the black township of Transkai near Capetown; and if he will attempt to have the deportation order which has been served on Father O'Riordan revoked.

Father O'Riordan has now happily been released. Unfortunately his deportation order was implemented on 21 February. He is staying abroad at present, and is expected to return to Ireand some time soon. My Department were in regular contact throughout his imprisonment with the Church authorities in the area, both directly and through an honorary consul in Johannesburg.
