Vol. 364 No. 8

Written Answers. - Membership of EC.

19.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that Mr. Turgut Ozal, the Prime Minister of Turkey, recently told a gathering of prominent businessmen to be ready for possible entry into the EC by 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

No request for membership of the Community has been received from Turkey. Relations between the Community and Turkey are governed by the Association Agreement signed in Ankara in 1964. This provides for free trade in industrial products. It also includes reference to possible membership of the Community at some time in the future. Under the terms of the EC Treaty any European state may apply to become a member of the Community.
