Vol. 364 No. 8

Written Answers. - Employment of Forestry Work Contractors.

43.

Mr. Coughlan

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if it is the intention of his Department to offer to private contractors the planting of nursery trees in the Killygordon Forest area; and, if so, the reason and the effect which it will have on the employment of forestry workers, both temporary and permanent, compared with employment in previous years.

It is the Department's intention to engage local private contractors for some work in the Killygordon Forest area. The decision to employ contractors as opposed to direct temporary labour is based on a number of factors including cost, duration of the work, type of work, and other relevant management criteria. My Department has repeatedly assured trade unions representing forest workers that the employment of contractors will not affect the jobs of existing permanent employees.

In addition to the employment of contractors, five temporary employees are also being recruited by my Department at Killygordon Forest. There was no temporary employees recruited at the forest for this work in recent years.
