Vol. 365 No. 7

Written Answers. - Helvic Pier, Waterford.

71.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if he is aware of the inconvenience and loss of earnings caused to fishermen at Helvic Pier by lack of dredging; if he intends to take any measures to speed up the development of the harbour in conjunction with the plans of local fishermen which would result in proper dredging, increased berthage, and a marina at the old dock, which would be used for the benefit of local fishermen; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department is at present considering proposals for harbour development works at Helvic Pier which, in the main, consist of dredging of the harbour in order to increase berthage and flotation. Before a full economic appraisal of the proposals can be done, accurate costing of the dredging is essential. To this end I am arranging for a boring survey, which will provide the necessary data on the nature and contour of the sea bed, to be carried out as quickly as possible.
